Radon Solutions performs a radon measurement after every radon system installation.  This gives us confidence that we have fixed the radon problem in your home. The EPA encourages everyone to verify these test results with a third party or with a DIY home test.  Additionally, because of the unpredictable nature of radon entry, the EPA encourages everyone to conduct a post mitigation test at least every 2 years to ensure radon concentrations remain low.  There are 3 ways to do this follow-up measurement:

1) We would be happy to come back and perform the measurement and inspect the system.

2) Most KSU extension offices (found in every county) in the state of Kansas sell low-cost DIY test kits. If you are going to perform a DIY test, we recommend using these.  We know they perform quality checks on them. So, you won’t end up with a test kit that has been sitting on a hardware store shelf for 10 years.

3) Some Consumer Grade Continuous Electronic Radon Monitors have become good enough that we are confident in them as monitoring devices. If you decide to purchase one of these devices, we do recommend performing a cross check with a professional device or a certified DIY test kit every couple years, since all measurement devices can go out of calibration.  The ones we recommend are linked below.

FAQs About Radon Mitigation

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is produced by the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water, and it can accumulate in homes and buildings. Radon becomes a health risk when it is inhaled, as it can damage lung tissue and increase the risk of lung cancer. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States alone, making it the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The risk is especially significant for smokers and former smokers, but non-smokers are also at risk if they are exposed to radon over long periods. Because it’s impossible to detect radon without specialized equipment, it’s crucial to have your home tested for radon.

Radon gas can enter your home through cracks in solid floors, construction joints, and gaps around service pipes. It is also possible for radon to enter through your water supply, although this is uncommon in Kansas. The air pressure inside your home is usually lower than the pressure in the soil surrounding your home’s foundation, which causes the building to act like a vacuum, drawing radon in through these openings. Once inside, radon can accumulate. Because it is colorless and odorless, detecting radon requires specialized equipment. Fortunately, it is relatively inexpensive to measure and fix radon problems!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends taking action to reduce radon concentration in homes with radon concentrations of 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) or higher. However, no concentration of radon is considered completely safe. Long-term exposure to concentrations lower than 4.0 pCi/L can also pose health risks, and the EPA suggests considering remediation for concentrations between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. It’s essential to strive for the lowest possible radon concentrations. In many cases, radon mitigation systems can achieve concentrations well below the EPA Action Level, lowering long-term health risks significantly. Regular radon measurement can help ensure that concentrations remain low and that mitigation systems function correctly over time.

Reducing radon concentration in your home typically involves installing a radon mitigation system, which is the most effective way to lower radon concentrations. The most common mitigation techniques involve soil suction (also known as sub-slab depressurization), wherein pipes are inserted through the foundation to vent radon gas out of the home. Each solution should be tailored to the individual home and the radon concentrations detected. It is best to consult with a certified radon mitigation professional who can assess your home and develop a customized mitigation plan to effectively reduce radon concentrations.

If radon levels remain high after a mitigation system is installed, it is crucial to contact the mitigation professional who performed the installation for further evaluation. Often, high levels persist due to system issues such as inadequate suction but occasionally radon is entering the home from an unusual location. A radon professional can provide follow-up diagnostic tests and refine the system to ensure that it functions optimally.

In the state of Kansas, radon mitigation contractors are responsible for ensuring that a post mitigation measurement is conducted.  We always perform a post mitigation measurement with a professional electronic CRM to ensure elevated radon concentrations have been reduced.  We also encourage all of our clients to perform testing on their own either with a consumer grade radon monitor (approx $100-200) or with a charcoal test kit provided by the engineering extension offices ( approx $5-$10).  Although the cost is higher, the benefit of consumer grade continuous radon monitors is that they give the consumer updated data about their radon concentrations throughout the year.
